Every day when Wadjda goes to school in her home town of Riyadh, she passes a toy store selling a green bicycle. Her heart beats faster every time, because owning this green bike would also mean finally being able to assert herself against the boy next door, Abdullah, and outrun him as fast as the wind. Although girls are not allowed to ride bikes, Wadjda hatches a plan to earn money for the bike by doing illegal business in the school playground. But Wadjda's machinations are discovered, she is threatened with expulsion from school and her hopes of earning money are dashed. The girl has only one chance: she has to win the school's Koran recitation competition, which comes with a large prize. With great zeal and ingenuity, she sets about the task of becoming supposedly pious. And so she has no eyes for the problems of her mother, who is trying to prevent her husband from taking a second wife. But just like her courageous daughter, Wadjda's mother also realizes that she is ultimately on her own and has to take a rocky path to fight for a self-determined future for herself and her daughter.
The first full-length feature film from Saudi Arabia - made by a woman! In her debut film, Saudi director and screenwriter Haifaa Al Mansour tells the touching story of the ten-year-old girl Wadjda, who grows up on the outskirts of Riyadh and manages to realize her own dreams with courage and wit in defiance of strict conventions. The film paints a differentiated and authentic picture of the lives of Saudi women and conveys a unique inside view of the local culture and society.
